Wales return to the podium ...
It has been a long wait but on a day of fine performances by Welsh riders at the 2011 Inter-Area Team Cyclo-Cross Championships, the Senior and Junior Men's Team took third spot behind London and winners West Midlands.
The Milton Keynes Bowl provided a spectacular venue for the event with the tough course contained within the arena and making good use of its sloping sides. Men's Team leader Lee Williams was unfortunate to break his chain on the first lap and lose contact with the leading group but he was soon into the pits for a change of bike and back out, alongside Junior William Worrall, in pursuit. With the leading trio well out in front Williams gradually worked his way up to the back of the chasing group with Worrall not far behind. Joe Lally was struggling to stay with the pace and it was Ryan Bevis and Junior Matthew Thompson who would be the two other counting riders for Wales. Williams looked strong throughout the race and on the final lap started closing down on riders in front of him to move into an excellent fourth place at the finish, just 42 seconds behind the winner. Worrall was an impressive 15th. Bevis and Thompson had spent most of the race together but in a final burst Bevis dropped Thompson and crucially overhauled two East Midlands riders to finish 27th. With Thompson in 31st Wales beat East Midlands by two points to take 3rd place.
Wales had three Youth teams entered for the first race of the day and all gave very creditable performances. Fortunately the Boys A team were gridded on the front row which set up team leader Dylan Kerfoot-Robson for an early break away with the West Midlands duo of Danny Fox and Jack Ravenscroft. Although Kerfoot-Robson bettered the duo on the climbs he was unable to stay with them elsewhere and eventually dropped back to finish third at 51 seconds. With Nicholas Jones in outstanding form in 25th and Joe Holt 32nd, the Boys A team finished in fifth place. The second Boys team, led home by Alister Williams was 15th and the Girls, led home by Jessica Roberts, 4th.
A big thank you and well done goes to all the riders - you did us proud!

2011 Inter-Area Team Cyclo-Cross Championships
Following on from their latest National Trophy Cyclo-Cross Series successes Dylan Kerfoot-Robson, Jessica Roberts and William Worrall will be heading to Milton Keynes next weekend for the 2011 BC Inter-Area Team Cyclo-Cross Championships on 6th November.
All being well, Dylan will lead out the first of two Wales Youth Boys teams which include Welsh League regulars Joe Holt, Sam Beckingsale, Nicholas Jones, Alister Williams, Scott Dunster, Teifion Best and Jared Brooks. Scott was invited to step in for brother Ben after he suffered a horrific knee injury. Jessica joins Ffion James, Emily Haycox and Tanwen Jones in the Youth Girls team.
And, fingers crossed, the Men's team, which includes Lee Williams, Joe Lally, Ryan Bevis and Juniors Matthew Thompson, Adam King and William, will be at full-strength this year to challenge once again for a podium place. Sadly missing from the line-up is Andrew Baum who broke his collar-bone in Round 1 of the Rapha Super Series.
2011 Welsh League Round 6 ...
The Welsh 'Cross League headed for the South Wales Valleys on Sunday for the sixth round Darran Valley 'Cross at Parc Cwm Darran, the picturesque, landscaped site of the old Ogilivie Colliery. And with plenty of rain leading up to the event the riders looked as though they had been down a coal mine ... see here >>

The floodlit Merlin's Knight 'Cross promoted by Towy Riders and held in Carmarthen Park was a first for Wales ... and a success judging by comments such as ".. best cross race ever!! I could have gone round all night! That was good fun. Can we have the same again next year please!". Read more here >> and see Roy Bevis's photos on flickr >>
2011 Welsh League Round 4 ...
A little rain overnight may have dampened the grass but otherwise conditions were perfect for Round 4 of the Welsh Cyclo-Cross League at Penlan Sports Fields in Brecon. The Brecon Beacons provided a stunning back-drop for the racing, captured once again through the lens of Roy Bevis - see here >>

2011 Welsh League Round 3 ...
The Welsh Cyclo-Cross League hopped over the border into Herefordshire for the Round 3 Climb On Bikes promotion on the Foxley Estate, site of a US Air Force hospital camp in World War Two, at Mansel Lacy near Hereford. Lack of rain made for fast, if rather hard and bone-shaking conditions. Roy Bevis was there with his camera - see his photos on flickr >> and read the race reports here >>
2011 Welsh League Round 2 ...
Risca to a regular cyclo-crosser is synonymous with rain. This year though it was sun-screen and shades as the sun shone and the temperature climbed. Witness the action courtesy of Roy Bevis on flickr >> and read about it here >>

2011 Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross ...
Well done everyone - especially North Wales Cyclo-Cross Group riders Matt Pritchard (21st in 3:30:11), who was unlucky to have his tyre explode while up in 7th place, Pete Windsor (49th and 11th V40 in 3:43:40) and Chris Purt (88th in 3:55:07) and Hanneke van der Werf who put her race on hold to help out an injured fellow rider. Still trying to finish in under the very elusive 4 hour mark was 5th Welsh rider to cross the line Simon Nurse. Read his blog on the event here >>
A full rider list for this year's Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross on 25th September can be found here >>
Welsh riders among the 682 so far confirmed include Paul Bennett, Donald Gray, Simon Nurse and Craig Standage (Cardiff JIF), Stephen Bradbrook, Mark Jones and Chris Purt (North Wales Cyclo-Cross), Gareth Chislett and Shaun Lewis (CC Blaenau Gwent), Dan Field (Ystwyth CC), Ruth Metcalfe and Peter O'Brien (Rhos-on-Sea CC), Adrian Peall (Forza Cycles RT), Hanneke van der Werf (Cardiff Ajax) and Peter Windsor (Clwb Beicio Llyn). 2011 Welsh League starts soon ...
The 2011 Welsh Cyclo-Cross League will get underway shortly with a full calendar on offer. The opening round of the 11-event series will be Cardiff JIF's Calf-burner 'Cross at Llantarnam High School near Cwmbran on Sunday 18th September. The venue was a popular addition last year (the start will be improved!) with its mix of technical woodland track and sports field switchbacks and run-ups. Expect some fast racing here. And a first for the Welsh League will be Towy Riders' floodlit 'cross on Saturday 22nd October at Carmarthen Park, another popular new venue last season.
A big thank you goes to all the organizers for giving us another full series of events - venues are difficult to come by. There should be something for everyone though, so come along and give them your support. You can either dip into the series when there is an event in your area or take it more seriously and challenge for an overall League postion and maybe one of our highly desirable trophies.
