'Cross in the Park/2010 Welsh League Round 7 Margam Park
Organiser Tim Raine had altered the main course for this year’s ‘cross in Margam Park … gone was the soggy half in the Deer Park, replaced by grass and gravel track around Twyn-yr-hydd Farm … and for once there had been no rain the previous day. The ground was sticky though and mud and leaves caused problems for some … but the changes met with the riders’ approval.
Some tights bends in the U10/U12 course proved tricky to negotiate but failed to slow the progress of the League leaders. In the U10 race Huw Higgins-Worrall (Abergavenny RC) and Owain Roberts (Towy Riders) were soon well ahead of the chasers led by Rhys Barter (M & D Cycles) and Llewellyn Price (Abergavenny RC). Higgins-Worrall looked to have the measure of Roberts … until the penultimate lap. It was Roberts in the lead as they charged down the finishing straight to take the bell, with sister Evelyn separating Higgins-Worrall from his rival. Roberts held on to take his 5th victory and an improving Oliver Beere (Maindy Flyers) overhauled Price and team-mate Mitchell Cole for 3rd. U10 Girl Emma Finucane comfortably took the win ahead of fellow Towy Rider Eluned King and newcomer Ellie Shaw (Maindy Flyers). And after a slow start Aled Trott (Abergavenny RC) was a comfortable winner in the U8s ahead of twins Bevan and Ayrton Smith (Maindy Flyers) respectively. Anna Doheny (Abergavenny RC) was 1st U8 Girl.
Jessica Roberts (Towy Riders) led from start to finish in the U12 race leaving James Tillett (Newport Velo), Ieuan Best and Nathan Ford (both Abergavenny RC) to fight for the other podium places. First Best then Tillett headed the chasers but neither challenged Roberts and they finished well down with a three-up sprint to the line won by Tillett.
Likewise in the Youth race there was another commanding performance by Adam King (Cardiff JIF) with Scott Davies (Towy Riders) resigned to 2nd place. U14s Nicholas Jones (Towy Riders), Alister Williams and Ffion James (both Abergavenny RC) all rode strongly and were the only other riders to finish on the same lap as King, with Williams notching up another win over Jones. James had finished 2nd U14 Girl at Round 3 of the National Trophy Series the previous weekend.
Lee Williams (Team Wiggle) was also back on home soil after his outstanding 4th place at Mallory Park, easing his way off the front of the field and lapping all but Joe Lally (CC Abergavenny) and Junior William Worrall (Towy Riders). With Williams out of reach Lally and Worrall traded positions in the battle for 2nd place; Worrall took this by 8 seconds, 1.45 minutes down on Williams. Evergreen Graham Edwards was 1st Veteran in 4th place, disappointed to have been lapped by Williams on the line. Amy Roberts (Cardiff Ajax) was 1st Woman, again turning out to ride ‘cross after a hard evening’s racing at Revolution 30.
