Getting Cross at Ty Mawr/2010 Welsh League Round 3 Ty Mawr, Penperlleni

For a second year the weather gods smiled for the ‘cross at Ty Mawr Farm, Penperlleni and the scenery of the Usk Valley south-east of Abergavenny provided a stunning backdrop. A sharp frost had soaked the grass in the fields but tracks had been mown and the grass cuttings blown off, so the course was drying out, as the sun got to work, even as the first race got underway.

The U10 and U12 races are proving to be real crowd pleasers; in the U10s lone Towy Rider Owain Roberts is up against the Abergavenny RC quintet of Huw Higgins-Worrall, Mitchell Cole, Llewellyn ‘Welly’ Price, Rhys Thomas and Tom Lane with his U8 team-mate Josh Tarling snapping at their heels. With one win apiece Higgins-Worrall and Roberts soon forged a gap on the others but Thomas was working hard in pursuit and by mid-race had distanced himself from the chasing group. On the penultimate lap Higgins-Worrall pulled away to take the win from Roberts with Thomas 3rd. Tarling overhauled a fading Lane to finish an excellent 6th and 1st U8. Isabelle Bennett (Cardiff JIF) was 1st U10 Girl, just ahead of Eluned King (Towy Riders) and Anna Doheny (Abergavenny RC) was 1st U8 Girl.

Towy Rider Jessica Roberts soon had a sizeable lead at the front of the U12 field and she continued to look strong as positions changed behind her. Nathan Ford (Abergavenny RC) headed the chasing group with first Sam and then James Tillett (Newport Velo) on his wheel. But 6 laps out in front started to tell and the penultimate lap saw Ford and Sam Tillett catch Roberts. She was not going to give in without a fight and stayed with the boys. But it was Ford who led them through the trees for the final time. Could he hold his nerve? The answer was yes and he took his second win of the season with Sam Tillett 2nd and Roberts 3rd and 1st Girl.

Adam King (Cardiff JIF) continued his dominance in the Youth race and steadily rode away from the rest of the field on the strength-sapping main course. His usual rival Scott Davies (Towy Riders) was feeling the effects of a cold and his win at the Welsh Schools ‘Cross Championships the previous day and it was King’s team-mate Geraint Manley who took an excellent second with an impressive Amy Hill (Newport Velo) 3rd and 1st U16 Girl. Joe Holt (Llyn CC), who had stayed down in South Wales after the Schools Championships, was 1st U14 Boy and, making a welcome return to ‘cross, Megan Barker (Maindy Flyers) was 1st U14 Girl.

The Senior line-up promised some exciting racing with Lee Williams (Team Wiggle) challenging the dominant Baum/Worrall duo. And indeed it was these three who led the field, with Baum on the front, as the race unfolded. Midway through, however, Worrall was dropped, the first year Junior finding the pace too hot – lap times were coming down! Williams continued to sit in behind Baum, biding his time until the penultimate lap when he established enough of a gap to comfortably take the win from Baum with Worrall a distant 3rd. Guy Stevens (Abergavenny RC) stamped his authority on the Veteran category, finishing 7th overall and Ruby Miller (Forza Cycles) was 1st Woman.
